Key Stage 2

Welcome to Preps 3 - 6

Our Key Stage 2 children (Prep 3 to Prep 6) develop their academic skills and grow in confidence within the nurturing family environment at Spring Grove. Form teachers, working together with specialist Science, Languages, Art, Music, ICT and Sports staff, help children to reach their potential in many disciplines and enjoy a broad and varied curriculum. In the classroom, each child has access to a Chromebook, and outside we make the most of our beautiful rural setting, with sporting activities three afternoons a week, and a wealth of extra-curricular clubs and regular visits to Forest School.

Representing the school in a sports team is a new opportunity from Prep 3, with friendly matches introduced from Under 8 level upwards. Educational trips are organised throughout the year, including residential trips for Prep 5 to Château de la Baudonnière, while Prep 6 go away for an activity-based experience.

In their final year, all Prep 6 children enjoy a leadership role as School prefects, ready to face the challenge of moving on, whether this is to a grammar school via the 11+ (Kent Test), or within the private sector, with a pleasing number of Spring Grove School pupils each year winning scholarships to independent schools.

Daily routine in Key Stage 2

  • The school day in Key Stage 2 begins at 8.30am and finishes at 4.30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays; 3.30pm on Wednesdays and Fridays. These finish times may change if your child is involved in a games fixture.

  • In normal times, on a Friday morning we have Family Assembly in the Sunley Hall to which all parents are invited. The assembly begins at 8.50am and coffee and tea is served in the hall from 8.30am. Under current Covid-19 restrictions this assembly is live-streamed to parents at 9.15am on Friday mornings.

  • PE/Games lessons take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Fixtures for Prep 5-6 are usually on Wednesdays, and Prep 3-4 on Thursdays. KS2 children go to Forest School every 2 weeks for a whole afternoon.

  • We encourage parents to look and share in the children’s work throughout the year. Parent Consultations (currently virtual meetings) take place regularly with appointments made through our SchoolsBuddy app, and teachers are always available for an informal chat by phone (please contact the School Office to arrange this).

We offer wraparound care which must be pre-booked 72 hours in advance:
Breakfast Club 7.30am to 8.30am
Crèche 3.30pm to 4.30pm
SG Extra (incl. packed tea) 4.30pm to 6pm
Information about charges for wraparound care can be found on the school website www.springgroveschool.co.uk

Key Stage class uniform:
Spring Grove School Uniform list 2020-21 We ask parents to provide a pair of wellingtons, waterproofs and school fleece to leave at school as the children go outside to play (almost) everyday. On PE days the children come to school dressed in PE kit, and on Forest School days they come in Forest School clothes - long-sleeved tops and long trousers to protect arms and legs. They also need waterproof tops and bottoms for rainy days at Forest School.

Morning snack and lunch:
We ask parents to provide children with a healthy snack for morning break - preferably fruit and vegetables but cheese, breadsticks, crackers etc. are perfectly acceptable. We provide water but it is a good idea to supply a named water bottle to keep in school from Monday-Friday. We are a nut-free school so if you do send any food into school please ensure that nuts, or any products containing nuts, are not sent in. All children eat their lunch in the School Hall, with the Key Stage 2 staff. The lunch menu is on a 3-week rotation and copies of the menu are published in the School Messenger (newsletter).
